Dive Leader -- Crossover

The SSI Open Water Instructor crossover program is designed to orientate Instructors who were trained by other certification agencies, to the teaching and business philosophy of SSI.Our main goal during the course will be to make you knowledgeable and comfortable with SSI Programs, products and services, so that you may confidently teach SSI courses.

We understand that as an instructor you are a busy Dive Professional, so our crossover program has been designed to be completed in a minimum amount of time. Depending on candidate numbers and what level you wish to crossover to, the course can be completed in as little as one to one and half days (with additional home preparation). For Store Owners crossing over, we like to spend an extra bit of time one-on-one bringing them up to speed with the SSI system and how they will interact with the regional office.

Course Prerequisites are:

  • Be an active Open Water Instructor or higher with a Scuba training organization for at least 6 months
  • Have logged at least 100 dives
  • Have taught or assisted in at least 1 scuba course during the past year
  • Have a current medical exam for diving signed by a physician
  • Have proof of CPR & First Aid training within the last 24 months
  • During the program the emphasis is on introducing you to the SSI System rather than testing your teaching abilities. We respect the fact that as certified Diving Instructors you already possess the knowledge and skills to teach and certify student divers. Our focus will be to simply introduce you to the SSI system and show you how to gain the maximum benefit from the support materials provided.

The crossover is made up of three components:

  • 1. Home Preparation: Your Instructor Crossover Training kit will include a home preparation guide listing Pre-study assignments that need to be completed prior to the course start date. Topics include, SSI History & Philosophy, SSI Training Standards and SSI educational System etc.
  • 2. Academic Workshop: This session will include a review of the material already learned during home study as well as information pertinent to scheduling and teaching the SSI Open Water Diver Course.
  • 3. In-Water Teaching Workshop: The purpose of this session is to orientate you to a few specific diving skills which SSI teaches slightly differently than other training agencies.

After Graduation
Upon graduation, SSI Open Water Instructors are authorized to conduct the Open Water Diver, Scuba Skills Update, Try Scuba and Snorkelling courses. They can also attend an SSI Advanced Open Water instructor course.

Crossover Levels
SSI accepts all your current qualifications and experience level, so if you hold additional Instructor Ratings from another training agency you may crossover to a level comparable to your qualifications. In this instance Instructors are required to receive a brief outline on how to conduct the courses from the SSI Instructor Trainer and purchase a copy of the current SSI training materials.

SSI has a full-range of specialty diver courses including, Nitrox, Rebreather, Deep Air, Navigation, Night, Photography, Equipment, Computer etc.

Successfully completing your SSI Instructor Crossover will authorize you to conduct SSI programs to the level to which you crossover to.

SSI Instructor levels are:

  • Open Water Instructor
  • Specialty Instructor
  • Advanced Open Water Instructor
  • Dive Control Specialist Instructor
  • Master Instructor

Active Status
To maintain active status, Instructors must be affiliated with an SSI Dealer and have current insurance (if required by local law).

Program Cost
Due to variances in content, duration and training needed, you should contact the Training Facility for the cost of your program.
